Disclaimer
Named Light Star Registry is a novelty and commemorative gift service. We believe in being completely transparent about what we offer and what we do not. The following disclaimers are important — please read them before placing an order.
1. No Official Astronomical Recognition
Star names registered through NamedLight, LLC and the Named Light Star Registry are recorded exclusively in our private registry database. They are not recognized by:
- The International Astronomical Union (IAU) — the only internationally recognized body with authority to officially name stars and other celestial objects.
- NASA or any agency of the United States government.
- The United States Naval Observatory, Royal Astronomical Society, or any other scientific institution.
- Any national or international governmental authority.
The approximately 300 stars with official IAU-recognized proper names — such as Sirius, Vega, Polaris, and Betelgeuse — were assigned through the IAU's formal process. Those stars are not part of our assignable pool.
If you purchase a star registration as a gift, please ensure the recipient understands this is a personal and commemorative designation, not an official scientific one. This is part of what makes it a gift — it's something meaningful between people, not a government record.
2. The Stars Are Real
While the naming is personal and non-official, the stars themselves are entirely real. Every star in our registry is drawn from the HYG Astronomical Database, a scientifically compiled catalog that aggregates data from:
- The Hipparcos Space Astrometry Mission — a European Space Agency satellite mission that precisely measured the positions and distances of over 100,000 stars.
- The Yale Bright Star Catalogue — a comprehensive catalog of stars visible to the naked eye.
- The Gliese Catalogue of Nearby Stars — a catalog of stars within 25 parsecs of the Sun.
The coordinates, distances, spectral classes, and constellation assignments listed on your certificate and registry page are real astronomical data. An amateur astronomer with a decent telescope and the right ascension and declination on your certificate could locate your star in the night sky.
3. Sky Map Images
Sky map images displayed on certificates and registry pages are real photographic sky survey images retrieved from the Digitized Sky Survey (DSS2) via the CDS HiPS astronomical image service maintained by the Centre de Données astronomiques de Strasbourg.
These images represent actual telescopic survey data of the region of sky surrounding your star. Because the images are derived from photographic plate surveys of wide sky areas, they may contain many stars in addition to yours — your specific star is the one at the center of the image, at the coordinates listed on your certificate.
In rare cases where the sky map service is temporarily unavailable, we may use a representative image from the same general region of the sky. If you receive a certificate and are not satisfied with the sky image, contact us within 30 days and we will reassign your star and regenerate your certificate at no charge.
4. Permanence of Registry Pages
We intend registry pages to be permanent. The URL assigned to your registration is designed to remain accessible indefinitely. However:
- We cannot guarantee 100% uptime or permanent availability of the Site in all future circumstances.
- In the unlikely event that NamedLight, LLC ceases operations, we will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice and an opportunity to download your certificate and registry data.
- We reserve the right to remove registry pages that contain content that violates our Terms and Conditions.
Registry pages are public and may be discovered by anyone with the link. From time to time, we may select registry pages to be featured in our public search gallery as examples of named stars. If your page is selected and you would prefer it not be featured, simply contact us and we will remove it promptly.
5. Physical Certificate Delivery
Printed certificates are produced and mailed by NamedLight, LLC. We use standard mail carriers (USPS and international equivalents). While we make every reasonable effort to ensure delivery:
- Delivery times are estimates, not guarantees.
- We are not responsible for delays caused by carriers, weather, or circumstances beyond our control.
- We are not responsible for non-delivery to an incorrect address provided by you.
If your printed certificate does not arrive within 30 days, contact us and we will investigate and reprint at our discretion.
6. Limitation of Liability
To the fullest extent permitted by applicable Nevada law, NamedLight, LLC shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages of any kind arising from your use of this service. Our liability is limited to the amount you paid for your specific order.
For full terms, please read our Terms and Conditions.
✦ What You Get
A real star at verified astronomical coordinates, assigned to a name that means something to you, with a beautiful certificate and a permanent registry page.
✦ What You Don't Get
An IAU-recognized official star name. No star naming company in the world can provide that — the IAU does not sell or assign naming rights to private businesses or individuals.
✦ Why It Still Matters
Humans have named stars since antiquity — long before the IAU existed. A name that matters to you is worth something, regardless of whether a scientific body endorses it.
